Insuring Marine
Employees Seminar

Marine workers face risks that standard workers compensation policies were never designed to cover. Longshore claims, maritime employer liability, and the interplay between federal and state acts create coverage gaps that can leave employers exposed and agents in a difficult position.

This two-day CMIP seminar gives you the working knowledge to identify those gaps, structure the right coverage, and confidently handle marine employee accounts from submission to policy.

What You Will Learn

This seminar covers the full landscape of insuring employees who work in, on, or around navigable waters:

  • The Longshore and Harbor Workers Compensation Act (LHWCA) — who it covers, how it works, and where standard WC falls short

  • State Act Workers Compensation for maritime employees and how to determine which act applies

  • Maritime Employers Liability (MEL): the role it plays alongside Longshore coverage and why it matters for vessel operators and contractors

  • Payroll allocations and how to classify maritime employees accurately for rating purposes

  • The Jones Act and its application to seamen: how it differs from Longshore and what agents need to know

  • How to identify and avoid coverage gaps that expose employers and create E&O risk for agents

  • Common account types: shipyards, marine contractors, port and terminal operators, marine labor providers

Who Should Attend

This seminar is designed for insurance agents, brokers, and underwriters who encounter marine employee risks, or who want to. No prior marine insurance specialization is required. If you write or want to write commercial accounts with any waterfront or vessel exposure, this seminar gives you the foundation to do it confidently.
